Many people who get online today focus on the wrong thing right away. Many of you do some basic keyword research and learn that the keyword your site is about is getting searched for a lot and you start designing a page around that.

This is what I call shooting yourself in the foot before you get started. Many people will build a site then spend the next year trying to get that site traffic competing with millions of websites and virtually get no where.

This recipe for disaster will happen to 90% of sites online so be glad you came across this article because we will show you how to avoid mistakes that kill the ability to make money and get you making money faster. That simply is the bottom line! Why do all the work if you are not going to make money. Niche Marketing is finding an area where lots of people are looking for information and finding very little results to there problem or need. You can simply step in and fill the need and reap the benefits.

Here is a list of things you will need to understand before doing research.


People do not search the internet to buy things. They search looking for information to a problem. If they want to buy something and they are ready to buy it they go to trusted catalog sites like Amazon.com or eBay.com. That means they are looking for information first and if they have enough information that will satisfy them that they have enough information to make a buying decision then they may purchase.

The Supply & Demand Matrix

If you were to consider your websites foundation as 3 legs of a stool, if you are missing one of these legs the foundation will fall over. The 3 legs that you absolutely must build upon before attempting to sell online are these 3 things.

A) Demand is the amount of searches done on a specific issue problem or information wanted. (How many different ways are people asking for information about the same problem and are there a high number of searches? How much demand is there?)

B) Supply is the number of websites who are competing for this niche market. ( How many sites are focused and going after the group of key phrases that make up a niche problem or need if this is low you have a Niche Market Worth Targeting )

C) Credibility is the 3rd and most important leg your foundation must be built on. If we can find a niche that has a large demand and finding very little results or answers to the problem that they want to learn more about, then its easy to step in and fill that need. But only if you can sell the reader that you have enough credibility to be teaching them this information.
How to Do The Market Research to find a Niche When doing Market Research we start with a software called wordtracker.com this is a paid service but well worth the money. You need to actually be able to effectively determine what information the market is demanding and how does your product or service solve that problem or become the solution. Then you need to be able to easily see how many sites were competing for the niche. Then you will need to determine if people would pay for it online.

Step 1) Get online with Wordtracker.com
Step 2) Go into Keyword Universe
Step 3) Bottom left corner select the compressed database This database will give you the most variables so if you type in lose weight green tea it will give you a list of keywords that contain those words in any order.
Step 4) Type problem based words into the Popularity Search Box On The Right and look for link above all the words called “Click here to ad to words to cart. This part of the exercise is important you will want to be specific with a Problem type word + Topic + Action word and then think of all the variable words that mean the same thing. Example: Problem word ( How) + Action (lose weight) + Topic (Green tea) You will get all the variables of those words. Example 2: Problem word (information) + Action ( weight loss) + Topic ( green tea)

Step 5) After adding hundreds or thousands of words to cart click where it says Click here for step 3 and then select Competition search.Step 5) The Competition Search will analyze how many sites are competing for the key phrase. Only Select Google and then click proceed at the bottom.
Step 6) Open an excel spreadsheet and copy and past the list from word tracker into it. (note) it’s a good idea to just copy the first 3 results to start so you can format the page and be able to easily see all the keywords.
Step 7) Now at this point color code the keyword phrases by line with a highlighted color as long as the key phrase means the same thing. So all yellows mean the same thing even though they are different phrases they still want the same problem solved. I call this clustering like keyword phrases by meaning not by word. This is tedious but very important.
Step 8) Select sheet 2 on the spreadsheet after all words have been clustered with a color on sheet 1 and place all the colors together so you will see all the yellow then all the green then all the blue instead of the rainbow of color you saw on the sheet 1.
Step 9) Select the Niche that has the most potential and move it to sheet 3. Try to build a bigger list by being more specific and staying completely focused on that niche.

Is The Niche Viable?

At this point you will have a large list of keywords that all mean the exact same thing. You now have a potential Niche Market but you now need to see if the market is viable. “Will people pay for this online? Does your product or service fill this need?”

At this point we do a search for the most competitive keywords in our list and look at the competition.
1) How does the headline relate to the Niche?
2) What are they doing that you are not?
3) What Price are they selling the solution for?
4) What are they paying per click for that keyword?
You learn all these things by studying the competition of the sites ranking on top of Google and those who are in the sponsored listings on the right hand side. Then go to Overture.com and search for the keywords and see what they are paying per click. You can also do this by doing a competition search in wordtracker.com using overture instead of Google and you can see what people are willing to pay.

What are people saying about Competitors, Products or Problems?

Using Google Groups which is a link in google.com homepage you can do a search for the problems and not what people are saying. Then do a search for the actual solutions that are competing and not what people are saying. Then Search the actual competitor websites and learn a ton about what people want so you can prepare your sales copy.
What Have You Learned?

1) You found a large list of key phrases that mean the same thing.
a) Now you know if there is demand.
b) You now have a large list of keyphrases to buy traffic that will be 100% focused.
c) You can gauge your sales copy on the real issue.
d) You know exactly what keyphrases you can rank for on search engines with low competition.

a) Now you know what they are offering

I am an Internet Marketing Strategist. I do consulting work with small medium enterprise. I got started doing this type of work after working for a company about 10 years ago as a search engine optimization specialist. Over the years of designing sites that rank well on search engines for the best keywords I realized that many of my clients were still not doing well. The single most contributing factor was that after spending money on web site design they did not want to keep the web site up to date because it cost money. The catch 22 was they did not want to spend more money unless the site started making them money.

If a website has a page that contains a special or products that are no longer available at those prices and a customer calls or places an order they will very quickly become annoyed and feel that that company is not reputable to deal with. So simply not keeping a site up to date actually works against a companies reputation.

Other factors that make websites not earn money is the misconception that a website is a transactional system where people come and buy things. I call this "Field of Dreams Marketing" "The Build it and they will come mentality!"What people fail to realize is that people search for information way before they are ready to buy a product or service. So the key is to find a way to communicate with people and educate them first and if you have done it properly they will seek you out and buy from you.

The way the most successfully websites are making money is by offering a free report or information they should have before buying and then following up with automated email responders that would automatically educate your prospective buyer. This is accomplished via opt in email system with auto responders. This can also be accomplished via direct mail however its a lot more expensive.

The key to making money online is having the right tools to get the job done and waiting for webdesigners to get it done is costly and time consuming. I also found that it disrupts the creative energy a marketing person has as they cant easily put the ideas into action so no action ever happens.
